Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun

Shizuku Mizutani is apathetic toward her classmates, only caring about her grades. However, her cold view of life begins to change when she meets Haru Yoshida, a violent troublemaker who stopped attending class after getting into a fight early in the school year. He is not much different from her, though—he too understands little about human nature and does not have any friends. Much to Shizuku's surprise, he proclaims that she will be his friend and immediately confesses his feelings toward her upon meeting her.

Because of her lack of friends and social interaction, Shizuku has a hard time understanding her relationship with Haru. But slowly, their friendship begins to progress, and she discovers that there is more to Haru than violence. She begins to develop feelings for him, but is unsure what kind of emotions she is experiencing. Together, Shizuku and Haru explore the true nature of their relationship and emotions.

My Little Monster is a refreshing and unconventional shoujo anime that blends comedy, chaos, and unexpected sweetness. At the center of the story is Shizuku Mizutani, a studious, emotionally distant girl whose world gets turned upside down when she meets Haru Yoshida—a wildly unpredictable classmate who’s both brilliant and socially clueless.

What makes this anime stand out is the dynamic between the leads. Shizuku’s blunt, no-nonsense attitude contrasts hilariously with Haru’s impulsive and intense personality. Their relationship doesn’t follow the usual romantic formula—there’s awkwardness, misunderstanding, emotional growth, and a lot of moments that feel surprisingly real for a high school romance. Haru confesses his feelings almost ... immediately, flipping the slow-burn trope on its head, while Shizuku struggles to understand her own emotions.

The side characters also add charm and depth, each with their own quirks and personal struggles. Natsume, Sasayan, and Yamaken in particular help flesh out the emotional landscape beyond just the main couple.

Visually, the animation is colorful and clean, with expressive character designs that really suit the show’s vibrant tone. The comedy can be a bit over-the-top at times, but it balances out with genuinely heartfelt moments that explore themes like loneliness, identity, and what it means to connect with others.

If there’s one downside, it’s that the anime ends before the full story from the manga is resolved, which might leave some viewers wanting more closure. Still, the journey is well worth it—and for those who need more, the manga offers a satisfying continuation.

Overall, My Little Monster is a charming, emotionally honest take on teen romance. It’s funny, awkward, and unexpectedly tender—just like falling in love for the first time.

Mixed Feelings

It's not every day you come across a rom-com that's equal parts sweet and frustrating.

I'll start with the good stuff - the characters are pretty well-developed, especially Shizuku and Haru. Their relationship is weirdly adorable, and I loved watching them navigate their feelings for each other. The ing cast is great too, especially Natsume (he's like the ultimate bro).

But here's the thing - the pacing is kinda wonky. Some parts feel rushed, while others drag on forever. And don't even get me started on the plot twists. I mean, I get it, they're trying to keep things interesting, but some of it just feels like ... unnecessary drama.

Despite all that, I still enjoyed this anime. It's like, I couldn't help but root for Shizuku and Haru, even when they were being super annoying. And the animation is gorgeous - the backgrounds are so detailed and pretty.

Overall, I'd give it 7/10. It's not perfect, but it's a cute, fun watch if you're in the mood for something lighthearted. Just be prepared for some eye-rolling moments.

P.S. Can someone please explain to me why Haru's hair is so floppy? Like, is it a stylistic choice or something?

Honestly i thought it was going to be a good anime where the concept of falling in love will be simple but the female protagonist made everything so shit .

I found her really disturbing and annoying .the story was unique but in a bad way for me .

I don't think you should watch this if you are planning for a cute romance anime . This anime will just make a simple thing really big and waste your time .

Even after completing the anime I didn't feel even a bit attached to the story. The story remains dry thoroughly.

The review is my personal opinion but ... if you want to try something different with no romance then you can go for it.
