Sonic X

Sonic the Hedgehog's typical irreverence leads to the coveted chaos emeralds being caught in the crossfire and rendered unstable just before activation. The resulting chaos control engulfs everything for miles around Dr. Eggman's base, and, with scrambled input, nobody can predict the outcome.

Isolated from his friends and enemies alike, Sonic awakes in a strange world: an unknown city surrounded by mysterious people. He realizes he has been warped across the universe to an entirely different planet—Earth. As he rushes to escape the equally confused authorities, Sonic finds himself falling head-first into the pool of the illustrious Thorndyke family.

Thankfully, Christopher, Thonrdykes' son, saves Sonic and offers protection from a society that mistakenly believes him to be hostile. Sheltered by the family, Sonic resolves to regroup with his friends, save this new world from the threat he brought to them, and find a way home.

Sonic X is a nostalgic, action-packed anime that brings the beloved SEGA characters into a new dimension—literally. With its fast-paced storytelling, memorable music, and colorful animation, Sonic X manages to capture the spirit of the franchise while offering something different for fans of both Sonic and anime.

The series starts strong with the "Chaos Emerald" and "Sonic Adventure" arcs, introducing a human world where Sonic and his friends are stranded. The action scenes are surprisingly well-choreographed for a kids' show, and the soundtrack is energetic and fitting. While some later arcs can feel repetitive or drawn-out, the third season (Metarex Saga) adds a darker tone and ... deeper themes, which elevate the stakes and character development.

Much of the criticism around Sonic X revolves around Chris Thorndyke. While it's easy to dismiss him as the “annoying human kid,” this overlooks the role he plays in the story. Chris serves as a narrative bridge between Sonic’s world and Earth. His emotional connection to Sonic reflects a common theme in anime: the pain of growing up and letting go. His flaws—clinginess, immaturity—are deliberate, showing a child struggling with loneliness and friendship. While his presence is sometimes overemphasized, he's far from the worst character in anime history.

In summary, Sonic X is far from perfect but has heart, action, and genuine moments of growth. It's a fun watch for fans of Sonic or early 2000s anime, and definitely deserves more credit than it often gets.

Mixed Feelings

It actually feels a little strange that MyAnimeList doesn't separate this show into different entries by season, the way pretty much everywhere you can stream it marks a distinction between the seasons, because each of the three seasons felt like a very different experience to me.

Season one is a pretty generic kids' show. Sonic and company accidentally get themselves transported to Earth and befriend a young boy named Chris, who doesn't really have a personality to speak of but DOES have a conveniently rich and influential family. So the Thorndyke mansion becomes the gang's headquarters as they go about their conflict of the week ... type storylines, fighting Dr. Eggman and trying to find a way back to their own planet.

It's fine for what it is. Good even. I imagine the targeted age group (which is around 7 years old) would find this show pretty enjoyable. I liking it quite a lot when I was a kid. But some kids' shows are just... stronger than others. Enjoyable in more of an all-ages kind of way. And I wouldn't say season one of Sonic X held up that well, in that regard. I found it a little dull and inconsequential as an adult. (But again, that's not a particularly strong critique, as I recognize that it's not MADE for adults.)

I was actually really disappointed with season two. I'd really been looking forward to season two, because it's the batch of episodes that animates the storylines from the Sonic Adventure games that I'd grown up on and still fondly. All I can say... All I probably HAVE to say... is that, though the full season is 26 episodes, BOTH games' storylines are shoved into the first eleven. Everything was so insanely rushed that none of the genuinely emotional plot points from the games manage to leave an impact or even hit the target at all, most of the time. It was just really bad.

And then they try to shove in a storyline with Chris when it finally is time for the Sonic characters to return home.... About how he can't bring himself to say goodbye because they've changed his life so much and he finally has real friends after being neglected by his parents all his life... And honestly, that didn't really work either. It SHOULD have. I was expecting a storyline like that pretty much from the moment his family dynamics are introduced. But Chris never seemed all that bothered by his parents' absence in his life until that very moment. And even then, they really didn't play that kind of storyline out to its full potential the way they could have. If Chris had been this super timid kid who hadn't been able to make any friends at school or anything either until befriending Sonic's gang gave him some courage or something... it could have worked. But this kid was perfectly-- frankly, unreasonably-- well-adjusted until the moment the story demanded that he not be to try and manipulate an emotional response out of the audience, and I just wasn't falling for it.

But season three actually brought this show back around. Thanks to some time warp shenanigans, Chis is now a lot older than he looks, complete with some skills that allow him to actually help out in a crisis, instead of just get captured and need to be rescued. So that was nice. And the story did shift to be enjoyable in more of that all-ages way. A longer, continuous conflict. Character development that actually meant something and moved me a bit. (Chris isn't the only one who got to grow up. Cream gets a nice little arc where she wants to prove to her mother that she's mature enough to go into battle with her friends too, and she DOES pull her weight in this final season.) The traveling-around-the-galaxy storyline was actually a little reminiscent of Dragon Ball GT to me. Honestly, season three could almost stand alone. This anime does, at least, go out on a pretty strong note.
I wouldn't say it's good enough that I'm likely to ever rewatch it, just for fun. But it's pretty good over all, even ing for some really rough patches.

I'm a Sonic fan so watching this felt like an obligation, especially considering how it pretty much shaped the Fandom as we know it today. I have zero nostalgia for this and I watched the Japanese subbed version because 4Kids heavily butchered it like most kids anime from the 2000's.

The show follows who else but Sonic who was Isekai'd to the human world where he meets Chris Thorndyke, a mostly boring kid who's only personality trait is simping for him. After he reunites with his friends they must collect the 7 Chaos Emeralds before Eggman does, or atleast that's what the show implies because ... in most episodes absolutely nothing happens, the story has incredibly low stakes because everyone ends up accepting Sonic into society less than a third in, the main characters besides Knuckles don't care about returning to their planet, there's not even a reason for them to return until 50 episodes in, and said reason is a confusing one. Eggman and his goons are as incompetent as Team Rocket, except that doesn't work here because Team Rocket is just a bump on Ash's road to become a Pokemon Master, not the main concern.

This leads into a bigger problem I have with this show and is that almost every established character has been flanderized and all the new ones (With exceptions) are one-note, for starters, this is were "Fangirl Amy" and "Idiot Knuckles" pretty much came from, Sonic himself does absolutely nothing a lot of the time besides sleeping, and he himself acts like an Idiot a lot of the time and then there's Chris Thorndyke, he's supposed to be relatable but lives in a huge ass mansion with two famous parents, a scientist grandfather and two racial stereotype butlers. His conflict comes from being alone and supposedly having no friends, except he already does, and one of them is far more sympathetic and interesting than him yet has a single episode of development, but none of this would be so bad if he didn't do something so selfish you instantly grow to hate him at the very end of Season 2

Seasons 1 & 2: 4/10 - The only redeeming factor is that it genuinely made me laugh sometimes.

The show however is redeemed in it's third season originally made as filler comissioned by 4Kids, as it tells the story of how an alien race called "The Metarex" Invades Mobius (I'm refusing to call it "Sonic's World") and how Sonic and friends must travel trough space to gather the 7 Chaos Emeralds that Sonic scattered. The genre shifts into a space opera heavily influenced by Leiji Matsumoto's works and it's full of moments that wouldn't be too out of place in one of the Sonic Adventure games. This part carries the show and is a must watch for any Sonic fan, I just recommend skipping 2 seasons of lame stuff to enjoy it.

Season 3: 7/10 - Tbh I haven't seen Yamato yet but this kinda makes me want to.
