Gintama°

Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura return as the fun-loving but broke of the Yorozuya team! Living in an alternate-reality Edo, where swords are prohibited and alien overlords have conquered Japan, they try to thrive on doing whatever work they can get their hands on. However, Shinpachi and Kagura still haven't been paid... Does Gin-chan really spend all that cash playing pachinko?

Meanwhile, when Gintoki drunkenly staggers home one night, an alien spaceship crashes nearby. A fatally injured crew member emerges from the ship and gives Gintoki a strange, clock-shaped device, warning him that it is incredibly powerful and must be safeguarded. Mistaking it for his alarm clock, Gintoki proceeds to smash the device the next morning and suddenly discovers that the world outside his apartment has come to a standstill. With Kagura and Shinpachi at his side, he sets off to get the device fixed; though, as usual, nothing is ever that simple for the Yorozuya team.

Filled with tongue-in-cheek humor and moments of heartfelt emotion, Gintama's fourth season finds Gintoki and his friends facing both their most hilarious misadventures and most dangerous crises yet.

Absolutely amazing season and the perfect mix of comedy and arcs. Boy those last two arcs were incredible and you could really feel the stakes were at their highest. The story really picks up around here, and to me, the pacing is perfect. Plot twists were unexpected and every episode left you craving for more!
Both the shogun and the farewell shinsengumi arc were so well done that choosing which is the best between the two is incredibly hard, and the chef's kiss fight choreography just makes the episodes way more enjoyable.
Not only the story improved, but the animation and art is continuously improving so far. ... Really enjoyable to look at.

After 300 episodes, you can REALLY connect with the characters. What i like about this anime is that all characters have something going on for them and no side character is left out. When you think "they forgot about him" no, that side character comes back for more fun. Plus, they're all amazingly written, each having flaws and recognizing them but still being real to themselves.

Shoutout to the comedy arcs too tho, especially soul switch and frozen time!

Cannot recommend Gintama enough to people, ESPECIALLY this season, which is arguably the best.

Mixed Feelings

Preliminary (34/51 eps)

The next two paragraphs can be summarized to "the plot is skip-able"

I think most people will agree when I say Gintama is primarily a comedy series before anything. This is mostly what I like about it. I watch it to laugh, and sometimes I do, but not all the time. Sometimes there's actual plot or "serious" arcs which are seemingly put in for no other reason than to disrupt the shows comedic pacing or show that Gintama has some merit besides being a comedy series, but honestly for me they just ruin the comedic flow.

The plot is not that stellar. So I wont judge it ... based on that, even though there are long arcs with actual plot in them, you wont be doing yourself a disservice by skipping them and enjoying the show as a comedy series, IMO. If you disagree with this, please feel free to correct me but I feel safe in making the assumption that very few people watch Gintama for the plot.

So anyway, back to the actual thing we're all here for: the comedy. It's aight. That is, if we're grouping most of the episodes and "averaging the funny", its pretty okay, and that's what my rating reflects, an average of how much this season made me laugh.

Although if we look at this season on an episode by episode basis, I can confidently say a lot of the episodes have failed to make me laugh, and most episodes are kind of mid only providing the rare chuckle, BUTTTT some episodes such as episode 31 and especially 32 had me GENUINELY laughing. It's because of these standout episodes that I raise Gintama from a "mid" rating to an "above average". At this point halfway through the season am I overly excited to keep watching? Not really, its more like I have nothing else to watch and this show is pretty good/alright.

I genuinely hope Ill get more episodes that made me laugh as hard as ep 32, and I'll update this and maybe raise the rating if they do, but as of right now, Gintama is pretty good to/ alright, 6/10.

UPDATE: NVM, it literally has one more comedy episode which is kind of mid and then just turns into pure plot. Really disappointed.

2nd update: before you message me on this, yes i've seen the first season, no i did not start on 4th, i understand the characters and the world i just dont care about the plot whatsoever.

There's no simple way to begin dissecting a show as directionless as this, so I’ll start by addressing the comedy. You think it would try to be more innovative and varied with its selection as the show goes on, but the same juvenile gags keep on getting repeated each season. I mean, there is a reason why I haven't laughed in over 100 episodes. If the show fails to make me laugh, it can at least do something by changing up the style to prevent me from getting bored. With each ing episode, the show starts to feel more like watching a slide ... show presentation seeing the same repetitive style used constantly.

In the first season, it made hard attempts to balance a decent amount of comedy and drama, even if I personally thought those attempts weren’t really successful. Everything after that feels completely half assed That’s the problem: noting in this show can be taken seriously. This was always first and foremost a comedy (as much as it wants to be).

Why should I ever feel sympathy for a characters that just scream in my ear 90% of the time just because they have some tearjerking backstory? What’s the point in getting worked up over a character's death if they're just going to turn out to be perfectly fine the next episode? What’s the point in putting the slightest bit of investment into that one guy if I know he’s just going to be running around naked once this arc is done taking him seriously?

The arcs themselves are mediocre at best, and I'm only talking about the serious arcs. Even though they are a huge improvement in of pure entertainment compared to the episodic parts, they're still feel very underwhelming.

I have to it, I really did want to like this show. From an aesthetic point of view it has remarkably high production values compared to other long running shounen that improve with each season. It was stupid enough to believe the writing would improve along with it let alone completing 4 seasons of this crap.
