07-Ghost

Barsburg Empire's Military Academy is known for training elites who bring victory to the empire. Students of the academy freely utilize an ability called "Zaiphon" to fight, while the types of Zaiphon usable depends on the nature of the soldier.

Teito Klein, a student at the academy, is one of the most promising soldiers produced. Although ridiculed by everyone for being a sklave (German for slave) with no memories of his past, he is befriended by a fellow student called Mikage. While preparing for the final exam, Teito uncovers a dark secret related to his past. When an attempt to assassinate Ayanami, a high-ranking official who killed his father, fails, Teito is locked away awaiting punishment.

Only wanting the best for Teito, Mikage helps him escape. Teito ends up at the 7th District Church where he is taken in by the bishops. It is here that Teito attempts to evade the grasp of Ayanami and the Military, so he can rediscover his memories and learn why he is the person that can change the fate of the world.

I actually watching this series as a kid, and I liking it a lot. I mostly liked the weapons and how cool the characters were. Teito and Labrador were my favorite characters, and I also liked how cool looking Frau was. This was also my introduction to becoming a BL shipper, because I was a Labrador x Castor girlie. Even read their stories on fanfiction. I reading the manga as well, and this was actually one of my first introductions to manga. It'll always have a special place in my heart.

The show is interesting enough ... for anyone who likes complex and political plots. Teito was a slave to the empire and he swears revenge against them. He also has a special eye that people are after. I do that from my time as a kid, and rooting for Teito's revenge. I was also always skeptical of Frau and couldn't understand if he was an enemy or a foe. He moved weird. Lol. ittedly, a lot of the other plot points probably went over my head. I'll definitely have to give the manga re-read and hope I enjoy it as much as I did when I was a kid.

I definitely recommend this series. It has a political plot and is a military anime, so if those are what you like then you'll enjoy this series. Even if you don't care about that, you'll still enjoy it for the cute guys and also how interesting they are. Labrador shocked me by how cool he was, because I always saw him as adorable.

Mixed Feelings

07-Ghost is one of those anime that flew under the radar but deserves more love. Released in 2009 by Studio DEEN, this anime is a mix of fantasy, action, and a bit of that classic “bishounen drama” that we secretly (or not-so-secretly) love. Based on the manga by Yuki Amemiya and Yukino Ichihara, it follows Teito Klein, a military academy student with a mysterious past, who gets tangled in a battle between the Barsburg Empire and the Seven Ghosts. Oh, and there’s a lot of emotional bromance going on, just saying.

The world-building is pretty solid, and I loved the mix of military themes with religious ... and supernatural elements. That said, the pacing can be hit or miss. Some episodes are packed with action and intrigue, while others drag with exposition-heavy dialogues. And let’s be real—some plot points can get confusing, especially with all the lore drops. But if you’re into a story with mystery, power struggles, and dramatic emotional moments, you’ll probably enjoy it.

Teito is your classic brooding protagonist with a tragic past, but he’s likable. He starts cold and distant but slowly opens up, especially thanks to his bond with the priest (and absolute sweetheart) Frau. Speaking of Frau—he’s easily one of the best characters. He’s that “I-don’t-care-but-I-actually-do” type, and his interactions with Teito add a lot of heart (and humor) to the show.

Since this is a Studio DEEN production, the animation is decent but not groundbreaking. The character designs are chef’s kiss—I mean, the long coats, the dramatic stares, the soft lighting that makes everything look slightly ethereal? Love it. But there are some moments where the animation quality dips, especially in action scenes. It’s not terrible, but don’t expect too much.

Okay, let’s talk about the real star of 07-Ghost—the music. The soundtrack is SO good, with an emotional, almost sacred tone that fits the anime’s themes perfectly. The OP, “Aka no Kakera” by Yuki Suzuki, is a total bop and sets the mood right from the start. The ending theme, “Hitomi no Kotae,” is a slower, melancholic song that honestly hits right in the feels.

As for voice acting, the Japanese cast is excellent—Mitsuki Saiga as Teito does a fantastic job of capturing his emotions. The dub, though, is not as strong, in my opinion. If you’re a sub vs. dub person, I’d say go for the sub.

07-Ghost has its flaws, but it’s an enjoyable watch if you’re into fantasy anime with a mix of action, emotions, and a touch of angst. The world is intriguing, the characters are engaging, and the story keeps you invested—though it leaves some unanswered questions. (And no, the anime doesn’t adapt the full manga, which is so frustrating.)

I’d recommend it if you like series with deep lore, emotionally charged friendships (cough almost BL vibes cough), and a main character with a tragic yet hopeful journey. If you’re looking for an action-packed, fast-paced anime, though, this one might test your patience.

Final Rating: 7/10
It has a good story, great characters, and solid world-building, but pacing issues and an unfinished adaptation hold it back. Still, it’s worth a watch, especially if you’re into the vibes.

A poorly written series that appeals mostly through erotic aesthetics rather than good directing and character immersion. It had a big fandom when it aired, most of which were fujoshis. It was also made by DEEN, the studio anime went to die, with lazy production values and poor directing by the guy who ruined Record of Lodoss War and Beelzebub with his dull handling of the source material.

A blend of medieval fantasy and science fiction, visually it can be attractive with its fairy-talelike aesthetics. It combines clergy life, occult mystery and military super-soldier projects for some rather surreal backgrounds. It’s also a series full of ... bishounens, so it will be extra captivating to the fujoshis; everybody is made to look like a hot dream boy dressed in cassock, any fangirl would kill just to touch his hair. They have glances and smirks that can lure you into their arms in less than 3 seconds. There are some women and old people as well but they are just background decoration or cute mascots, like a perky mermaid, a pink fuzzy critter and a trio of aloof sisters.

The series can look awesome when you focus on still frames, but when you notice how terrible the animation is, then things get messy. Action scenes and visual effects are your typical DEEN crap, with battle choreography being a joke, explosions never damaging the background, and magic attacks existing on a different plane of existence since they were computer generated instead of drawn along with the background. The characters move very little, flapping mouths is most of what is moving, and jumping is just a static picture that slides across the screen. I can go on for hours, but you can just check the opening and see that Teito fellow sitting on a spiky rooftop without it somehow sticking in his ass.

So yeah the series disregards physics, making all battles completely boring and fake-looking. Just imagine that most action is limited to characters shaking their hands and magic stuff appearing that doesn’t affect the environment or other characters. If you are going to make it so bad, don’t make it at all.

The script seems very interesting as a concept with military black ops, mystical temples, scary ghosts, gay innuendos, a sort of detective feeling, and a lot of daily life in a fantasy setting. The overall ideas are mighty interesting, but when you watch it, it's so darn slow. Most episodes don’t even seem to progress the plot and the rest give you only a few seconds of important info. They could have taken out half the total duration and it still wouldn’t feel rushed.

It is also verystraightforward, since despite its events affecting the lives of millions it centers on five people at the most. It focuses too much on the military base and the temple, and it completely ignores every other location of an otherwise huge and complicating setting. You often forget there is supposed to be a plot about the fate of the world and you just look at hot choir boys walking elegantly. There is no pay-off at the end either, since it escalates for many episodes and ends with the story left incomplete.

Just like playing a date sim, the series is full of ero/moe archetypes you are supposed to like for their variety in looks and mannerisms and not for their personalities. Most of the cast was useless to the plot anyways; it was just there to increase your possible dream boyfriends that you would pick to date in some erogame.

The only characters the series needed were Teito and Mikage (the main couple… er, I mean pair), any one of the priests, and Ayanami the psycho military man. The rest were dressing. The only thing you are left to gasp at are the pretty faces of the males. More specifically, their frozen still faces with smirks full of erotic innuendo, while their hair and clothes flap in the wind with a few repeating frames.

TL;DR: Neeext! If you are a seasoned viewer this series will offer you nothing. It’s not even remotely interesting. The plot is snoringly slow and the characters are too generic. It was only made for horny fujoshis, and even then it’s a one-time watch at best, since it doesn’t do much with its content and was left incomplete. It was forgotten fast and is now buried under some pile of equally mediocre anime.
