Synopsis

"A big brother must always stay ahead of his younger brother. That is my responsibility as the older sibling"—these are the words that have always motivated Mutta Nanba to try his best when it came to his younger brother, Hibito. So naturally, in the summer of 2006 when the Nanba brothers witness something strange in the night sky, Hibito declared that he would become an astronaut and travel to the Moon, while Mutta countered with the affirmation that he would go to Mars. That was the promise they made to each other.

Now in 2025, while Hibito is working with NASA and preparing to become the first Japanese to land on the moon, Mutta has been fired from his job in an automotive development company. Having difficulty finding another job, Mutta is given a lifetime opportunity when he receives a letter from JAXA—the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency—telling him that he has been accepted to participate in the next astronaut selection. As if fate has given him a chance to fulfill the promise he made all those years ago, Mutta undertakes the difficult challenge of going to space.

Background

Uchuu Kyoudai was nominated for the second and third Manga Taisho Awards in 2009 and 2010. In 2011, the series won the 56th Shogakukan Manga Award, along with Yamikin Ushijima-kun. In the same year, it also won the 35th Kodansha Manga Award in the General category, along with 3-gatsu no Lion. The series also won the Reader Award of the 18th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2014.

The series has been simulpub digitally in English as Space Brothers by Crunchyroll since October 30, 2013. Kodansha Comics USA has been releasing the series digitally since November 3, 2015.

This manga deserves a lot more attention than it has had so far. I didn't find a single thing that wasn't right; everything, from the story to the characters, is so well balanced and portrayed with a relaxed yet exciting narrative pace: sometimes funny, sometimes exciting, sometimes touching, sometimes frustrating; all the emotions that the protagonists and the characters around them feel are so realistic that even those who follow their stories can only feel them in turn. I learned so much from this manga. I started reading it on crunchyroll last week until chapter 344 and there's only one thing I could say about this manga; A MASTERPIECE.
The characters were so funny, the art was so great and the story was so touching and so relatable I often shed tears while reading it.

I may be overreacting if I would say that this is one of the most beautiful and funniest manga I've ever read.

The story takes longer than other mangas, but this what makes it the most beautiful. You will see the struggles of both brothers, and the other characters. It's very inspiring, in a way that it is light, you can read it anytime or best to read it in public because you will be captivated in the story and people surrounding you will not matter (tried it several times.)
