Kaichou wa Maid-sama!

Misaki Ayuzawa is a unique phenomenon within Seika High School. In a predominantly male institution, she became the first-ever female student council president through her honesty and diligence. Ever since Misaki got promoted to the position, she has been working tirelessly to ensure a better school life for all girls. Despite that, Misaki is very strict with the boys, which has earned her the title "Demon President."

One day, after hearing a girl cry in the hallway, Misaki encounters Takumi Usui—the most popular boy in the school—as he rejects a love confession. Enraged at what she is seeing, Misaki reprimands him for making the girl cry. However, Usui is indifferent and brushes it off as nothing.

Unexpectedly, Misaki soon runs into Usui again, but this time when she is working at a maid cafe! Embarrassed that someone has found out about her secret occupation, Misaki promises herself not to let Usui destroy her reputation. However, the mysterious boy now begins to visit the same cafe regularly to observe and tease Misaki. When push comes to shove, will Usui still be able to keep the president's secret?

She’s determined to whip the rowdy boys into shape and create a better environment for the few female students… all while secretly working part-time at a maid café to her family.

Enter Usui Takumi—the mysterious, effortlessly cool heartthrob who discovers Misaki’s secret and decides to make her life a little more interesting. What follows is a hilarious and slow-burning love story ... filled with playful teasing, stubborn pride, and a surprisingly deep exploration of trust, gender expectations, and emotional walls.

What makes Maid Sama! shine is Misaki herself. She’s strong, smart, and fiercely independent—but also deeply human. Watching her slowly open up and wrestle with her feelings for Usui is as satisfying as it is frustrating (in the best way). Usui, while occasionally a little too perfect, balances out her sharp edges with his unwavering and cheeky charm.

The anime blends comedy and romance effortlessly, with vibrant animation and a catchy soundtrack that fits its energetic tone. It’s definitely tropey at times, but in a nostalgic, comforting way that fans of the genre will love.

The only real downside? The anime doesn’t cover the full manga, so key developments in their relationship happen off-screen unless you pick up the manga afterward. Still, what Maid Sama! offers is a fun, flirty, and feel-good watch that’s easy to binge and hard not to smile at.

Mixed Feelings

Rewatching this at 20 years of age was definitely an experience

Everything from the plot to the characters is just kind of laughable bc of how stereotypical and genuinely cringe it was. You know, I guess there was a reason middle school me would have rated this a 10/10. Like Usui not even lowkey, but straight up stalks her lmao. How does he just always pull up at the right moment Every Single Time. And don't talk to me abt "its romantic" GET A GRIP PLEASE. Not to mention the fact that he always plays really weird jokes on her to "show her shes still a ... girl" under her "manly" personality. Because its def normal to kind of harass people like that as long as they blush when you do it!! Like, I just can't get behind that message at all. It really makes me wonder what grown adult truly thought of this and saw nothing weird about it

Still this anime kind of was my whole personality for a point in my life so i cant hate too much.

And side note: They get brownie points for the soundtrack bc I'm a shooter for a banger ost, and they kinda did for me

Maid-sama! – Overrated and Underwhelming

I really tried to like Maid-sama!, but it just didn’t work for me. People say there’s a story but honestly, where is it? It felt like a repetitive cycle of forced romance and random “funny” moments that weren’t funny at all. The characters didn’t grow, and I didn’t feel any real emotional depth.
The main relationship felt unnatural, and Misaki’s attitude got annoying fast. I don’t get the hype it was boring, and honestly felt like a waste of time.
It was honestly a hard watch. The romance felt flat and predictable, and the jokes didn’t land. ... I kept hoping it would get better, but it never really did.

Not for me. Just boring and overhyped. 👎
