Dragon Ball not so much as it never tried to do anything particularly interesting, which is why I give it a middling score. Still, the early parts, the parts adapted into the "Dragon Ball" anime series were more consistently good and fun than the DBZ sections, though perhaps not peaking quite as highly. Obviously that was the stuff that Toriyama was best at, and there is a greater air of creativity and fun in those, though I tend to dislike the Piccolo content. The first two arcs of DBZ I consider to be quite good, at least on page if not screen.
As for the ones I rated highly? Eh, I may want to re-evaluate. One Piece, Soul Eater, FMA, are all good but perhaps not worthy of such high scores. (paragraph break)
To address Dragon Ball Super... It's bad. I've only watched a couple of episodes though and I reviewed it back when there were only that many. Some say it improves, but reading the summaries (for the tournament) I don't have much hope for it. The problem is that there's no intrigue or mystery, and the characterization is woefully underbaked, both for old and new. While I enjoyed some of the designs of the new characters, most seem to lack much personality or development, and my problems with the tournament arc are just that tournaments are so thoroughly well-trod by shonen in general, but DBZ especially. Tournaments are a convenient way to arrange fights when writers don't want to be creative and arrange their stories organically - they're a crutch, and let's face it, there's little to no reason for the tournament to have happened. The only motivation seems to be a somewhat underdeveloped (though not badly portrayed) rivalry between Beerus and Chanpa as well some other excuse about food. I just can't seem to care when there's little to nothing at stake. It could have been redeemed by having a roster of fun enemies with interesting powers, personalities and motivations, but as far as I can tell, the only one who is even mildly interesting was Cabba. Can't speak to the more recent stuff at all.
Anyway... hopefully I've explained myself a little, but I'm going to stand by the scores I've given.
