Both of these stories address similar themes: difficult relationships that don't have a clear path to success, self-discovery, and coming to with the past. Aku no Hana explores them through a dark coming-of-age story, while Watashi no Shounen does so through a complex relationship between a young boy and an older woman. I think Aku No Hana is slightly more dramatic than Watashi no Shounen, but they have similar levels of intensity.
