Clannad is not suppose to be sad, AF is. The first season is always your generic slice of life anime and the second season put the show in another dimension, more deep and sad. That's how Key's Visual Novel Works. BTW Angel beats and Clannad are written by the same author.

I absolutely hated the first season of Clannad, but the latter half of Afterstory is almost a masterpiece.
